AHEAD’s National Campaign against illegal dumping and waste disposal

AHEAD’s National Campaign against illegal dumping and waste disposal touches the heart of people!

Heart touching…
« Merci, c’est enn bon travail ki zot pe fer la (…) nou pa ti coné laman la fort coumsa! (..) bizin met poubel partou. Lerla dimun pou aret zet salté dan tou coin lari!» said Phillip of Trou D’eau Douce. This statement touched our heart. We extend our warm gratitude to all the respondents and to every person who participated in our campaign. Indeed an enriching wonderful experience at grass root. But the response that came from public raises serious concerns about garbage management, from bins to garbage collection and from dumping at Mare Chicose to the unknown provisions of the environment law. People feel abused and engulfed by the system!

People Speaking…
« Pena Poubel! » complained wildly Samuel, an inhabitant of Bel-Air. Ferozia, an elderly lady from Saint Pierre said « camion salté pa vini-méme! » and Vanisha a student from the University of Mauritius residing at Queen Victoria bitterly expressed her despair arguing that « dimun ki pou fer? Get dan Centre de Flacq ou mars lor simé … 1 poubel ou pa pou trové ! » The complaint list is long, indeed very long!

Our one aim…
AHEAD’s National Campaign against pollution, anti-dumping and anti-littering in Flacq unveiled the obvious. Our team of volunteers enthusiastically shared information with public and encouraged the inhabitants of in the region of Flacq adopt at least one habit that will keep Mauritius clean. In short, AHEAD believes that people must become more conscious and aware about waste management and the importance of the 3Rs – Reduce – Reuse and recycle. Unfortunately this concept has not yet gone in the daily habits of people!

Unveiling the obvious…
The further objective of our National Campaign against pollution, anti-dumping and anti-littering also aimed at sensitising people about the provisions of the law concerning environment pollution, dumping and littering. Unsurprisingly, although the public is aware that it is illegal in Mauritius to throw or dispose of garbage ‘illegally’ (everywhere and anywhere), they were not aware of the fine imposed by law including the fine quantum and its operating mechanism (enforcement of the law). AHEAD believes that the population has a right to be aware of the provisions of the law concerning the environment as it affects their rights, being given that bin facilities are not there and garbage collection by the Authorities seems irregular.

AHEAD petitions the Authorities…
In the aftermath of the campaign, AHEAD is preparing its report and statistics. It’s time to turn to the Authorities and the Institutions for a reporting of the facts and complaints for the betterment of the lives of the individual and with a view to make Mauritius clean.
