The International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/40/212 on 17 December 1985. International Volunteer Day (‘IVD’) is celebrated every year on 5 December. The IVD 2022 (#IVD2022) ccelebrates the theme of solidarity through volunteering. This campaign highlights the power of our collective humanity to drive positive change through volunteerism.
This year’s theme is ‘solidarity through volunteering’, expressing the wish to unite humanity to make the world a better place to live. It is self-contained and needs no further explanation. Volunteers are people who know that they are key to achieving the sustainable development goals and that their little action/s count a lot towards building a better now and a wonderful future for the present and future generations.
In September 2015, Mauritius, together with 193 Member states, Mauritius adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Transforming our world – ending poverty, protecting our planet and ensuring that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The Sustainable Development Goals (‘SDGs’) is a global action plan comprising of 17 Goals and 169 Targets, together with 232 indicators, to be reached by 2030.
8 more years to g till we reach year 2030. The figures are still daunting as the reality is brutal. People are still living in conditions that are unacceptable. In Mauritius we still have homeless people, stranded people living on the streets and Mauritius are still striving for 24/7 clean potable drinking water supply.
AHEAD regroups a number of volunteers who are supporting the various activities and projects. University students do come for their internships and the whole environment is transformed. AHEAD needs more volunteers as we are growing. We invite more people to volunteer with us so that we meet the sustainable development goals.
